What actually happens
The Punisher, Seasons 1–2 (2017, 2019) Frank Castle uncovers the military conspiracy behind his family's murder. Extremely violent, largely disconnected from the wider universe — which is the point.
Beyond the guide — added detail
Season 1 turns on Operation Cerberus, an off-books heroin-trafficking and assassination programme Castle unknowingly served in Afghanistan. His family was not collateral damage in a gang shootout: they were killed to silence him. The men responsible are his own former commander Ray Schoonover, CIA officer William Rawlins, and his closest friend Billy Russo, who sold him out for money.
He is helped by David Lieberman / Micro, an NSA analyst who faked his own death after leaking evidence of the same programme. Season 2 deals with the aftermath: Russo survives with his face destroyed and his memory fragmented, and Castle takes in a teenage witness, Amy Bendix, which is as close as the show comes to giving him a family again.
