What actually happens

Introduces Wolverine (Logan) — regenerative healing, adamantium-laced skeleton, retractable claws, no memory of his past; Rogue, who absorbs life force through skin contact; Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Magneto's Brotherhood including Mystique and Toad.

Logan (2017) — 2029. Mutants are nearly extinct. Xavier has a degenerative brain condition that causes lethal psychic seizures. Logan is dying of adamantium poisoning. He escorts a young clone, Laura / X-23, to safety and dies doing it.

Beyond the guide — added detail

The world has had no new mutant births in twenty-five years, because Transigen has been suppressing them covertly through the food supply while breeding its own mutant children from harvested DNA. Laura / X-23 is one of them — made from Logan's, which makes her his daughter in every sense the film cares about.

Logan is dying because the adamantium bonded to his skeleton has been poisoning him for a century and his healing factor can no longer keep pace. Xavier, in his nineties, has a degenerative brain condition that turns the most powerful mind on Earth into a weapon of mass destruction during seizures — the film quietly establishes that one such seizure already killed most of the X-Men. He is escorting the two of them north when he dies, and Laura buries him.
